Renovation is a way of re-interpretation of the past by new eyes of the present. Lots of gestures are required to determine the scope of the must-be preserved and renovated. This project requires the in-depth research and keen insight into how the museum could be interpreted by the modern terms. As long as architectural elements are added or removed from the original, approaches to preservation of its historical and spatial values are to be carefully taken into account.
roof

At the point where new materials and old bricks meet, there should be no “unfit match.” The relationship between the two different materials should carefully be considered. The proper material should fit the beside one, and should be consistently connected with one another. The choice after was to use the material, bricks for the newly attached building. The new material has a different color and relatively long spans. It seems to put emphasis on horizontal arrangement. When arranged with the original material, it emits matced feeling, and has consistency in terms of its horizontal juxtaposition.

program & circulation
Various programs and services are provided. Restaurant, artwork shop, cafe and exhibition space co-exist around the center. People’s circulation as well as walkway are considered. Circulation flows around the middle axis.
A huge stair linking the basement level and the first floor is located, emphasizing the main lobby. A straight, vertical stair case stands with the transparent elevator nearby.

light
The facade design has been stemmed from the intention behind to make natural lighting from outside to the ceiling possible. Translucent glasses allow light from the ceiling level.

facade
Materials with similar touch, but different color were used to give consistency onto the renovated part of the building. Colum design was stemmed from the outdoor column that stands in the original building’s balcony. The design has been dragged inside to give a feeling of difference of time frame in space.
