Agenda

사당은 수도권 남부의 주요 교통 허브임에도 불구하고, 많은 유동인구에 비해 머무는 시간이 짧고 상권 활성화가 저조한 지역이다. 이를 해결하기 위해 사람들이 오래 머물 수 있는 매력적인 문화 시설로서 남서울미술관을 재구성하고자 했다.

남서울미술관의 역사성을 보존하면서도 제한적인 기능을 보완하는 데 주안점을 두었다. 증축을 통해 미술관을 확장했으며 뮤지엄 샵, 카페, 수장고 등 미술관을 지원하는 프로그램들을 도입하여 사람들을 더욱 강력하게 끌어들이고자 했다. 증축 과정에서는 기존 건축물에 대한 최소한의 개입만으로 완전히 새로운 이미지를 만들고자 했다. 그 결과 과거와 현재의 공간이 공존하면서도 뚜렷한 대비를 이룬다.

이로써 남서울미술관은 단순한 전시 공간을 넘어, 과거의 역사성, 현재의 사건, 미래의 가능성이 공존하는 장소로 거듭날 것이다. 도시 속에 열려 있고, 시민들과 함께 호흡하는 문화의 거점이 되기를 바란다.

Sadang, despite being a major transportation hub in southern Seoul, suffers from short visitor dwell times and an underdeveloped local economy. To address this, the project aims to reconfigure the Nam-Seoul Museum of Art as an attractive cultural destination that encourages people to stay longer.
The design focuses on preserving the historical value of the museum while enhancing its limited functionality. Through expansion, new supporting programs such as a museum shop, café, and storage facilities were introduced to strengthen the museum’s role and draw in a wider public. The extension was carried out with minimal intervention to the original building, creating a completely new architectural image. As a result, the past and the present coexist in sharp yet meaningful contrast.
This transformation repositions the museum as more than just an exhibition space — it becomes a place where history, contemporary life, and future potential intersect. The Nam-Seoul Museum of Art aspires to be an open, living cultural landmark that connects with the city and its people.

Concept

이번 프로젝트를 통해 남서울미술관의 도시 안에서의 인식과 관계를 재구성하고자 했다. 실제로 많은 사람들이 바쁜 출퇴근으로 인해 이곳에 미술관이 있다는 사실조차 알지 못하고 있었고, 그만큼 공공 문화 시설로서의 존재감은 희미한 상태였다. 이에 따라, 남서울미술관의 존재를 드러내고 적극적으로 도시와 연결 짓는 것을 가장 중요한 목표로 두었다.
유동 인구가 많은 사당역 방향에서 미술관으로의 시야를 확보하고자 우리 은행을 드러내고, 그 자리에 선큰을 만들어 사람들이 모이는 열린 진입 공간을 만들었다. 기존의 지붕을 일부 해체하고, 새로운 전시 공간과 현대적 맥락에 어울리는 수평적 지붕 구조를 더했다. 역사적 건축물의 외관을 최대한 보존하면서 증축하여 과거와 현재가 공존하는 파사드가 완성되었다.

This project seeks to reframe how the Nam-Seoul Museum of Art is perceived and connected within the city. In reality, many people passing through the area—especially commuters—were unaware of the museum’s existence, and its presence as a public cultural facility remained faint.
The primary goal was to make the museum visible and actively connected to its urban surroundings. To secure a visual connection from the busy Sadang Station, the former Woori Bank building was removed and replaced with a sunken plaza—an open, inviting space where people can gather and enter the museum.
Part of the original roof was dismantled to introduce a new horizontal roof structure that reflects the current context and houses additional exhibition space. The historical façade was carefully preserved, allowing the past and present to coexist within a renewed architectural identity.

Program

미술관을 성격이 다른 5개의 공간으로 구성하여 전시 경험을 다층적으로 확장하고자 했다. 기존의 미술관은 구조를 최대한 존중하며 유지하여 복도를 중심으로 양쪽에 작은 전시실이 위치한다. 이 곳에는 주로 상설 전시가 열리게 된다. 증축한 건축물의 중심에는 아트리움이 자리잡고 있으며, 수직적 개방감을 통해 기존 미술관과는 전혀 다른 스케일의 감각을 전달한다. 가장 상층부는 무주공간으로 계획하여 스케일에 제약을 받지 않고 다양한 전시 연출이 가능하다. 기존 미술관 앞마당 하부의 지하 전시실은 천창을 통해 자연광이 유입되어 과거와 현재가 공간적으로 연결된다. 미술관 전면의 선큰은 스탠드를 중심으로 사람들이 모이고 다양한 활동이 일어나는 열린 공간으로 작용한다.

The museum is composed of five spaces with different characteristics, with the aim of expanding the exhibition experience in multiple layers. The existing museum maintains its structure as much as possible, with small exhibition rooms on both sides of the corridor. Permanent exhibitions are mainly held here. The center of the expanded building is an atrium, and through vertical openness, it conveys a sense of scale that is completely different from that of existing museums. The uppermost floor is planned as a column-free space, allowing for various exhibition presentations without being restricted by scale. The underground exhibition room below the existing museum’s front yard is filled with natural light through the skylight, spatially connecting the past and the present. The sunken space in front of the museum functions as an open space where people gather and various activities take place around the stands.

지하 1층은 관람의 시작점으로, 증축 미술관의 주 출입구가 위치한다. 미술관 기반 시설인 매표소와 뮤지엄 샵, 수장고가 있으며 과거와 현재를 연결하는 상징적인 전시관으로 구성된다. 가장 접근성이 좋은 1층은 누구나 와서 편하게 쉬었다 갈 수 있는 도심 속 휴식의 장소이다. 기존 미술관 전면에 테라스를 만들어 정원과 카페가 모두에게 열린 공간이 될 수 있도록 했다. 이곳에도 매표소가 있어 방문객은 1층에서도 자유롭게 전시를 시작할 수 있다. 2층은 기존 미술관의 정체성이 담겨있는 상설 전시 공간이다. 3층은 기획 전시를 위한 무주 공간으로 구성되어 있다. 아트리움을 통해 내부 공간과 시각적으로 연결되며 외부 풍경이 파노라마로 펼쳐지는 개방적인 전시 공간이다.

The basement floor is the starting point of the tour, and the main entrance of the expanded museum is located there. It consists of the ticket office, museum shop, and storage, which are the basic facilities of the museum, and a symbolic exhibition hall that connects the past and the present. The first floor, which is the most accessible, is a place of rest in the city where anyone can come and rest comfortably, and a terrace was created in front of the existing museum so that the garden and cafe can be open to everyone. There is also a ticket office here, so visitors can freely start the exhibition from the first floor. The second floor is a permanent exhibition space that contains the identity of the existing museum. The third floor consists of an unoccupied space for special exhibitions. It is an open exhibition space that is visually connected to the interior space through the atrium and offers a panoramic view of the exterior scenery.
