원 건물인 롤렉스 러닝 센터는 넓고 다용도적인 단일 공간을 특징으로 하며 이를 여러 층으로 분리하여 수직적 구조로 나타낸다. 본 프로젝트는 이러한 특성을 바탕으로 새로운 재조형화를 시도하였다.
우선 수직적이면서도 연속적인 공간감을 강조하기 위해 기존 센터에 존재하는 곡면의 기울기와 방향을 재배치하여 각 층이 서로 이어지는 듯한 구조를 형성하였다. 여기에 원 건물의 면에 존재하는 여러 구멍을 재해석하여 층이 높아질수록 구멍의 크기를 점차 확대함으로써 점진적으로 웅장한 공간감을 느낄 수 있도록 하였다.
이러한 웅장함을 더욱 강조하기 위해 원래 센터에 존재하던 구멍 요소들을 구조물의 중심부에 배치하였다. 구멍들은 위로 갈 수록 크기가 커져 하늘과 연결되는 느낌을 주며 사용자가 최하층의 중앙에 들어섰을 때 공간적 압도감을 극대화한다.
또한 원 건물에서 수평적 면의 구멍들을 단순히 잇던 창문은 재조형된 설계에서 기둥으로 해석되었다. 이 기둥은 두 가지 성격을 가진다. 하나는 불투명한 구조로 내부에 층간 이동을 위한 계단을 포함하고 다른 하나는 투명한 형태로 인테리어적 장식 요소로 기능한다.
The original Rolex Learning Center is characterized by its wide, multipurpose, single-level space. This project seeks to reinterpret that concept by dividing it into multiple floors, thereby expressing a vertical structure.
To emphasize both verticality and continuity, the slopes and directions of the original center’s curved surfaces were rearranged to create a structure where each floor appears seamlessly connected. In addition, the numerous openings found on the building’s surface were reinterpreted: as the floors rise, these openings gradually increase in size, producing an enhanced sense of grandeur.
To further highlight this monumental quality, the elements of openings from the original center were relocated to the central core of the structure. These openings expand upward, giving the impression of a connection to the sky, while intensifying the sense of spatial awe for those standing at the lowest central level.
Moreover, the horizontal openings of the original building, which simply functioned as windows, have been reimagined as columns in the redesigned scheme. These columns take on two distinct roles: one is opaque, housing staircases for vertical circulation, while the other is transparent, serving as a decorative interior element.
