문래꽃밭정원 대지는 주거지역으로 둘러싸여 있어, 이곳을 오가는 사람들은 대부분 출근길의 직장인과 등하교길의 학생들이다. 특별한 날을 위해 마음먹고 찾아오는 방문객보다는, 매일의 동선 안에 자연스럽게 이 공간이 놓여 있는 셈이다. 실제로 문래꽃밭정원은 이미 쉬는 날 아이들과 가족들이 부담 없이 찾아와 뛰어놀고 쉬어가는 야외 공간으로 자리 잡고 있다.
이 대지 위에 놓일 문화공간도 그 연장선에 있어야 한다고 생각한다. 지금까지의 대공연장들은 웅장한 로비와 정해진 관람 시간, 격식 있는 절차로 이루어져 있었고, 그만큼 일상과는 거리가 있는 공간이었다. 하지만 대공연장이 반드시 고상해야만 하는 이유는 없다고 생각한다. 놀이터를 찾던 발걸음 그대로 이어져 들어올 수 있는 공간이라면, 공연과 전시도 특별히 마음먹어야 하는 일이 아니라 산책하듯 마주치는 일상이 될 수 있을 것이다. 그래서 나는 이 대지에 모두를 위한 문화의 놀이터를 만들고자 한다.
The Mullae Flower Garden site is surrounded by residential areas, so the people who pass through it are mostly office workers on their way to work and students on their way to school. Rather than visitors who make a deliberate trip on special occasions, this space is already woven into people’s everyday routes. In fact, Mullae Flower Garden already functions as an outdoor space where children and families come to play and unwind freely on their days off.
I believe the cultural space to be built on this site should be an extension of that same everyday quality. Large performance halls, as they have existed so far, have been built around grand lobbies, fixed viewing schedules, and formal procedures — and in that sense, they have remained somewhat distant from daily life. But I don’t think a large performance hall needs to be dignified in order to justify its existence. If people can walk into this space the same way they walk into a playground, then performances and exhibitions can become something encountered casually, like a stroll, rather than something that requires deliberate effort. That is why I want to create, on this site, a cultural playground for everyone.
