Introduction

Program | Spatialization Project

Agenda

This spatialization project develops a Lightshade inspired by East Asian painting into a pavilion. The Lightshade expresses layering and the flow of lines through softly curved surfaces, arranged in layers that form a spiral. The spatialization process preserves these formal characteristics while allowing people to move and rest between the overlapping surfaces. The project carries the layering and flowing lines of East Asian painting, first explored through the Lightshade, into a space that people can physically experience.

Concept

Mountain ridges and flowing clouds in East Asian painting, particularly landscape painting, provide the inspiration for both the Lightshade and its spatialization. Layering and the flow of lines connect the two works. In the Lightshade, these qualities are expressed through soft, gently bent surfaces. Overlapping these surfaces gives the flowing lines a three-dimensional form. During spatialization, modifications to each surface were kept to a minimum to preserve these characteristics. By allowing people to move and rest between the layers, the composition of lines and surfaces originating in East Asian painting becomes a space that can be physically experienced.

Design

The design was guided by three key ideas: movement between layers, light entering between the layers and changing over time, and a blurred boundary between interior and exterior. While preserving the overlapping surfaces of the Lightshade, the spaces between them were developed to accommodate movement and rest. Visitors move between layers, viewing the surrounding landscape and experiencing the space differently according to their position. Light entering through the gaps and the connection between interior and exterior allow the spatial atmosphere to change with movement and the passage of time.

The design process began by turning the Lightshade upside down and removing its original spiral-shaped part. Various openings inspired by the initial draft were then created in the lower section, and the separate layers were connected to improve their interconnectivity. Building on this model, a slightly thicker version of the original Lightshade’s spiral element was added, creating a composition in which the spiral extended above the lower form. Finally, the spiral’s configuration was adjusted to blend more naturally with the preceding model. It was reconstructed using overlapping surfaces, extending the layering of the lower section into the spiral above. The final form was developed through this sequence of inverting the Lightshade and removing its spiral part, creating lower openings and connecting the layers, and adding and reconstructing the spiral element.

Program

The spatial experience unfolds through entry, ascent, and rest. As visitors move from lower to higher levels, their field of vision gradually changes. Moving between layers becomes an exploration of space along a continuous line. Along the way, openings frame particular views of the landscape, while gaps in the structure allow visitors to feel the breeze passing through. Visitors can also choose where to stay and comfortably sit or lie down, bringing together the experience of walking through the space and resting within it.

Openings facing different directions and gaps between the surfaces provide routes for light to enter. As the sun moves, the positions of light and shadow shift across the curved surfaces, creating different spatial atmospheres in the morning and afternoon. Even while remaining in the same place, visitors can experience changes in light over time. The boundary between interior and exterior also changes with the visitor’s position and direction of movement. Moving between the overlapping surfaces changes both the direction of views toward the landscape and the perception of being inside or outside. Interior and exterior flow into and intersect with each other, allowing visitors to experience the surrounding landscape, light, and breeze as they move and rest.
