Solving urban sprawl
Like in all other countries, urban sprawl phenomenon is a serious problem between lots of cities in Korea. It changed images of villiges, and teractions between people and spaces also changed in brief period. These processes are usually implemented by collapsing buildings and consturcting new spaces. However, not only dealing with these physical changes, they also changed programmetic part such as making vivid border between commercial area and residential area. Accessibility to commercial is important to people who live in the city, but the problem is that these new commercial facilities are mainly used by non-residents. The purpose of improving residents wellfare does not satisfied at all, and the city plan is still focused in economic profits by providing more commerical area to visitors from other region.

In Dong Sung dong , Seoul, I could easily find this border between residencial area and commercial area in programs and appearence. In this case, there is one more part could be added to this border. It is cultural area. Dong Sung dong is famous for small theaters and artistic movements. However these are also hard for residents to access because of too much visitors and their locations which are much easier for visitors to enter. This project is for pulling down this visible and invisible wall between residential area and increasing commercial/cultural area.

concept
tried to find the solution from the site itself, focused on physical condition. Start with dichotomy phenomenon of city, I suggest connection between two sides and use landscape to make this connection naturally. Using original landscape will help the residents movement, and also because of level difference between two sides, it can be indirect barrier from excessive visitors access to them.

Next, considering noise problem which could be caused through my new building, I arranged the programs to face commercial side and let the green space to be arranged close to residential side. These process applied to design my building through four stages . First stage is making pathways on ground level and make park on rest space. Then make a library space by using landscape. The roof of library performing two roles. Natural pathway and natural entrance. Next, I make the program mass based on the soundproof arrangement strategy. Lastly, activate vertical flow by making core and hall that extended to all programs.

plan & structure
Main structure system of curved roof, intended to follow the landscape contour, is glulam timber waffle structure. The purpose of using wooden material in structure is to make interior harmonious with design concept which planned to catch nature flow into the building.

The facade material is brick tiles. Brick tile facade is special symbol of cultural space in this city. Also using brick tiles to cover curved face much efficiently in construction.

Two plans on the above shows organizations of library space and media facilities. Library is organized through B1 floor and 1st floor. Because of landscape formed roof, it has various ceiling height naturally in same program and can make users to feel the landscape’s flow. On the 3rd floor, media rooms and theater are setted to offer users information in much convienient ways. They have similar facade because of light requirement for each program is same which need dark space.

interior
The purpose of maintaining green axis into the building shows on this image. With small trees, grass, and terrace material cross the floor, users can feel they are reading between the forest. Waffle structure could be shown in this space and this grid design keep continued through book shelves.
