Agenda

OMA’s Seoul National University Museum of Art is characterized by its translucent facade, exposed truss structure, large cantilevered mass, and circulation organized around a central core. From these architectural elements, i extracted the repetitive diagonal structural and reinterpreted it into a new sculptural form. Cutting rules were established based on the facade’s diagonal pattern, and the fragmented pieces were reassembled to create an ascending circulation path. Furthermore, the truss system functions not only as a structural support but also as a formative design principle that generates the overall architectural form.

Design Process

The process began by extracting one face from a single solid mass and unfolding it into a two-dimensional plane. The diagonal pattern of the truss was then projected onto this surface. Using these diagonals as cutting guidelines, the mass was sequentially divided, resulting in a series of elongated fragments and a single zigzag form. The zigzag element was therefore not intentionally designed, but rather emerged naturally through the process of cutting and reassembly.

The elongated fragments were subsequently recombined to form a new triangular composition. Each piece was repositioned at different levels, creating a three-dimensional spatial order. The remaining trapezoidal element functions as a circulation connector, linking the different levels of the composition.

The overall form was designed to expand from smaller triangles into progressively larger ones. As the composition rises, the scale of each fragment increases, evoking the cantilevered mass that defines the original building. The central zigzag element recalls the building’s core, while the surrounding fragments extend outward from it as if structurally supported by the center, reinforcing the visual expression of the cantilever.

Because every fragment was generated from the same cutting rule, they remain geometrically related rather than existing as isolated elements. Their shared cutting planes and directional logic allow the viewer to infer that they once belonged to a single unified mass when viewed from above. Ultimately, this project transforms the structural principles extracted from the original architecture into a new formal system through the processes of cutting and reassembly.
