이 프로젝트의 클라이언트는 성향이 정반대인 두 마리의 고양이다. 한 고양이는 잠과 혼자만의 시간을 즐기는 내향적인 성격이고, 다른 한 고양이는 사람을 좋아하고 늘 활동적으로 움직이는 외향적인 성격이다. 성향이 전혀 다른 두 고양이가 하나의 공간을 공유하면서 크고 작은 마찰이 생겼고, 실제로 외향적인 고양이가 거실을 뛰어다니다 다른 고양이와 부딪히는 사고도 있었다. 그 이후 내향적인 고양이는 상대를 피해 다니기 시작했다. 여기서 하나의 질문이 시작되었다. 성향이 다른 두 존재는 어떻게 하나의 공간에서 공존할 수 있을까?
이 질문에 대한 답으로 ‘지구본’이라는 형태를 선택했다. 지구본은 축(타워)과 구체(휠)라는 두 요소를 하나의 형태 안에 자연스럽게 담을 수 있었고, 이는 내향형에게 필요한 은신 공간과 외향형에게 필요한 관제탑 및 운동 기구를 하나의 오브제로 연결하는 매개가 되었다. 이 프로젝트는 지구본이라는 형태를 통해 서로 다른 두 고양이가 하나의 공간 안에서 공존할 수 있는 방법을 탐구한 결과물이다.
The clients of this project are two cats with completely opposite personalities. One is introverted, favoring sleep and solitude; the other is extroverted, sociable, and constantly active.
Sharing one space with such different temperaments led to friction, including an incident where the extroverted cat, running through the living room, collided with the introverted one — after which the introvert began actively avoiding the other. This raised a question: how can two beings with opposite personalities coexist within the same space?
The answer chosen was the form of a globe. A globe naturally contains two elements within a single shape — an axis and a sphere — making it a fitting medium to connect the introvert’s need for a hiding space with the extrovert’s need for a control tower and exercise equipment. This project is the result of exploring how two different cats can coexist within a single space, through the form of a globe.
Design
초기 디자인은 표준적인 지구본을 그대로 재현한 형태였다. 축은 타워로, 구체는 360도로 회전하는 캣휠로 기능하도록 계획했다. 그러나 이 형태는 보호자가 구체 내부를 청소하기 어렵다는 실질적인 문제를 가지고 있었고, 이를 해결하기 위해 지구본을 구성 요소별로 분해하는 과정을 거쳤다.
The initial design directly replicated a standard globe: the axis functioned as a tower, and the sphere functioned as a 360-degree rotating cat wheel. However, this form made it difficult for the owner to clean the inside of the sphere, prompting a redesign process that deconstructed the globe into separate components.
기둥 위에는 세 개의 형태가 놓인다. 구멍이 뚫린 하나의 구체, 그리고 캣휠에 부착된 두 개의 반투명 반구다. 지구본의 360도 회전은 두 방향의 움직임으로 단순화되었다. 두 개의 캣휠은 수직 회전을, 벤치에 부착된 구체는 수평 회전을 담당한다. 모든 구성 요소는 움직이도록 설계되어, 고양이와 사람 모두에게 시야의 변화를 제공한다.
Three forms now sit atop a central pillar: one sphere with an opening, and two translucent hemispheres attached to cat wheels. At the same time, the globe’s 360-degree rotation was simplified into two directions of movement: the two cat wheels handle vertical rotation, while the sphere attached to the bench handles horizontal rotation. Every component was designed to move, offering a changing view for both the cat and the owner.
