Agenda

The title 猫木 (Myomok) combines the characters 猫 (cat) and 木 (tree). In Korean, it is pronounced the same as myomok (苗木), meaning “sapling.” Replacing the first character creates a play on words that gives the familiar sound a new meaning: “a tree for cats.” The design translates this idea into furniture through the actions of climbing and hiding within a tree. Vertical pillars accommodate upward movement, while cavities within them provide places to hide. Three trunks are connected so that each serves both as a space for the cat and as a component of the overall piece.

Design

The initial design interpreted the trunk and branches of a tree quite literally. Platforms at different heights and a shelter surrounded a thick central trunk, with connecting bridges above and a cat wheel below. The aim was to accommodate several activities within one piece of furniture, recalling the experience of climbing a trunk and moving between branches. However, adding each function introduced more projecting elements, making the composition complex and bulky. This prompted a redesign that retained the vertical arrangement and sheltered interiors while refining the form and movement routes together.

초기 디자인 / Initial Design

In the developed design, the single thick trunk was reconfigured into three pillars, with functions arranged within and between them. The pillars share a profile that narrows and widens along its height, with one inverted to introduce variation. Their flaring surfaces meet at the top, bringing them together as a single piece of furniture. Solid wooden panels and vertical louvers form the outer surfaces. The panels provide concealment, while gaps between the louvers admit light and allow views outward. Together with the open areas between the pillars, these surfaces extend the overlap of openness and enclosure throughout the piece.

Movement routes connect the interiors of the pillars with the spaces between them. Small entrances and tunnels provide access at the base; steps and vertical climbing posts lead upward; and ramps and resting platforms link different areas. The open, piloti-like space below provides a passage beneath the furniture. A transparent acrylic panel at the top allows cats to look down beneath their feet. From passing underneath to entering a trunk and reaching the upper platform, each stage of movement offers a different degree of enclosure and a different view.
