Original building

Located on the EPFL campus in Switzerland, the Rolex Learning Center is one of SANAA’s most defining works, completely deconstructing the conventional spatial grammar of a traditional library. Its defining feature is a single, continuous three-dimensional curved concrete shell slab that undulates like a landscape within a massive 166-by-121-meter rectangular footprint, with columns and partition walls kept to an absolute minimum.

As the floor slab gently rises from the ground, the arches formed underneath serve as the campus’s primary pedestrian pathways and entrance thresholds. Inside, the subtle shifts in elevation and surface gradients naturally provide visual privacy and acoustic dampening without relying on physical partitions. In addition, 14 irregularly placed organic circular patios introduce natural daylight and ventilation while softly delineating diverse programs such as the library, cafe, and seminar spaces. Ultimately, the building erases artificial architectural boundaries, inviting users to experience an organic spatial continuity as if walking through an artificial topography.

Agenda

LAYERED FLOW

Starting from the continuous surfaces and organic spatial configuration of SANAA’s Rolex Learning Center, this project reinterprets the original architecture through the relationship between layers and voids.

While the original continuous, landscape-like floor connects space in a single seamless flow, this work translates that continuity into a sculptural dialogue of separated and overlapping slabs. Surfaces unfolding at varying heights and orientations exist independently yet coalesce into a unified overall rhythm. The resulting gaps and circular voids between them articulate the delicate balance between solid mass and empty space.

Here, the curved geometry is not merely an aesthetic choice to soften form, but an active device that shifts the orientation and level of each tier, guiding the overall sculptural flow. In addition, slender columns supporting the slabs accentuate the layering of horizontal planes while preserving an open, weightless quality between masses. Through this approach, the continuous single-surface condition of the precedent is translated into a new formal language of articulation and layering.

LAYERED FLOW investigates the dialogue between continuity and articulation, solid and void, and the horizontal and the curved—reconstructing the spatial essence of the precedent into a three-dimensional sculptural language.

Design process

First, Divided the building into multiple slabs, with Voids as the binding elements between slabs.

Second, Created test models of each slab, planning the curvature & layer of the whole structure.

Lastly, Finalized each slab’s design based on test models, and created 3D models for each slab.
