Agenda

타임머신 프로젝트는 알프레드 자리(Alfred Jarry)의 『How to Construct a Time Machine』에서 출발하여, 시간의 흐름과 기계의 관계를 물리적인 구조로 표현하고자 한 프로젝트이다.

The Time Machine project began with Alfred Jarry’s How to Construct a Time Machine, exploring how the relationship between time and machinery could be expressed through physical structures. Rather than understanding time as a linear progression from the past to the future, the project approaches it as a form of duration to which the machine must respond.
For the machine to function, it requires a reference that can maintain a consistent orientation and state without being governed by external motion, such as the passage of time or the Earth’s rotation. To explore this possibility, the project draws on the concept of an absolutely rigid body and the principles of the gyroscope, which responds to rotation across multiple axes.
The aim of the project is to translate the abstract concept of time into the structure of a moving machine. Rather than attempting to physically stop time itself, the project imagines a device that separates its own motion from external movement and maintains an independent reference. Through this approach, time is explored through structure and motion.

Design

Time is conceptualized not as a linear progression from past to future, but as a spherical space circulating in multiple directions. The sphere was established as the fundamental form, drawing on the principles of a gyroscope that rotates around three distinct axes to explore a machine that responds to the flow of time.
The design consists of a spherical system combining an outer frame and an inner rotating assembly. The outer frame is divided into multiple layers that surround the machine, enclosing it from external views. The gaps between these layers serve not merely as separations but as spaces into which new elements, such as a boarding structure, can penetrate. This arrangement creates a relationship in which the outer structure and inner space are separated yet connected.
The drive system transfers the motor’s rotational force to the inner assembly through a shaft. The inner structure is conceived to accommodate rotation around three axes, while a support shaft and bearing are positioned on the opposite side to support the rotating assembly. In this arrangement, the outer frame maintains a stable reference while the inner assembly moves within it.
To accommodate 3D printing, the rings and frame were divided into multiple components, designed to be assembled using stepped joints, bolts, and nuts. Ultimately, the project translates an interpretation of time as a spherical space into the form and motion of a machine through the principles of three-axis gyroscopic rotation and a multilayered outer frame.
