우리나라는 교회로 포화 상태이다. 역사적으로 한 때 교회는 지역의 중심이었으며, 하나의 큰 커뮤니티로 우리나라의 역사 속에서 여러 큰 역할을 했다. 그러나 이제는 너무 많은 교회들이 크면 큰 대로, 작으면 작은 대로, 건축적인 문제를 안고 존재한다.
한국 교회 건축의 근본적인 문제는 신학의 부족이다. 교회 건축에 대한 신학적 논의가 부족했기 때문에, 초기에 서구적 건축 양식을 그대로 본떴고 이후에 ‘유사고딕’ 형태의 건축물들이 한국 교회 건축의 전형이 되었다. 한국 교회 건축에서 제기되는 또 다른 문제는 배타성인데, 한국 교회의 공간은 타자의 환대에 인색한 편이다.
Korea is saturated with churches. Historically, the church was once the center of the region and played a large role in the history of Korea as a large community. However, too many churches now exist with architectural problems, regardless of their size.
The fundamental problem of Korean church architecture is the lack of theology. Due to the lack of theological discussions on church architecture, it was modeled after Western architectural styles in the beginning, and later, “Psudo-gothic”-type buildings became a model of Korean church architecture.
이러한 문제들이 인식되며 2000년대 부터 교회 건축의 공공성, 지역사회를 고려한 교회 건축 공간 계획에 대한 논의가 이루어져 왔다. 그러나 경제가 발전하고 교인이 늘어나며 대형교회의 사례가 늘어나 그만큼 지역에 미치는 영향이 큰데 비해 지역 사회에 선한 영향력을 미치기는 커녕 건축 과정과 건축 후에 논란이 있는 경우가 많았다.
특히 2020년 전 세계를 강타한 코로나 사태에 우리나라의 개신교계가 보여준 모습들은, 지역사회의 시민들에게 도움을 주고 모범을 보이는 것과 거리가 멀었다. 그리고 코로나 사태의 대응책으로 예배당 밖에서 진행된 ‘온라인 예배’는 신도들의 인식을 변화시켰으며, 당연하다고 생각했던 예배의 요소들에 대해 의문을 가지게 했다. 이러한 상황에서, 교회 건축에 있어서 끊임없이 요구되어 왔던 ‘공공성’에 대해 공유하는 교회라는 주제를 통해 풀어가려 한다.
Another problem raised in the construction of Korean churches is exclusivity, and the space of Korean churches is stingy with the hospitality of others. These problems have been recognized and since the 2000s, discussions have been taking into account the public nature of church architecture and the community-based planning of church architecture. However, while the economy developed, the number of church members increased, and the number of large churches increased, there were many controversies after the construction process and construction, rather than having a good influence on the local community.
In particular, the acts of Korea’s Protestant community seen in the Corona crisis that hit the world 2020 were far from helping and setting an example for citizens in the community. And as a countermeasure to the Corona crisis, “online worship” outside the chapel changed the perception of believers and raised questions about the elements of worship that were natural. In this situation, I tried to solve the “publicity” that has been constantly required in church construction through the theme of Sharing church.
Theme Background
교회 건축에 제기되어왔던 공공성, 코로나 시대의 경험, 교회를 하나의 생활 SOC로써 활용할 가능성 등을 종합하여 주제를 선정하였다.
The theme was selected based on the public nature of church architecture, the experience of the Corona era, and the possibility of using the church as a life SOC.
