Agenda

을지로와 이어져 높은 오피스 빌딩이 들어서 있는 명동의 북쪽은 쇼핑과 길거리 문화 등이 활발하지 않으며 상대적으로 정적인 분위기를 담고 있다. 명동의 북쪽을 대지로 선정하고, 과거 명동처럼 문화예술의 중심지를 만들어 명동에 새로운 문화예술의 파랑을 일으키고자 한다.

명동파랑은 예술가들이 모여 작업할 수 있는 환경과 공간을 제공하고, 공개공지와 연결된 새로운 거리를 통해 사람들을 예술가들과 교류하게 함으로써 문화적 허브의 역할을 수행할 수 있다. 현재의 명동은 동서남쪽을 중심으로 문화가 활성화되어 있다면, 앞으로는 명동의 북쪽도 명동의 특색을 담아 입구로서 기능하게 될 것이다.

The northern side of Myeongdong, linked to Euljiro and adorned with high-rise office buildings, exudes a clam ambiance, devoid of the vibrant shopping and street culture found elsewhere in Myeongdong. The intension of choosing this particular area was to resurrect the spirit of the Myeongdong of yesteryears, transforming it into a cultural hub once again.

Our vision includes creating spacious public areas at the eastern and western ends, along with a new street cutting across these spaces. This new public area will enhance cultural dialogues between artists and the public, fostering meaningful interactions. Myeongdong Parang will serve as the northern gateway to Myeongdong, ushering in a fresh cultural wave.

Site

명동의 북쪽 하나금융그룹 명동사옥 옆 부지를 선정했다. 원래는 2개의 부지였던 곳을 하나로 합쳐 약 3,800㎡의 가로로 긴 땅을 부지로 선정하였다. 이 사이트를 선정한 이유는 명동의 역사에서 시작된다.

We opted for a location situated to the north of Myeongdong, adjacent to Hana Financial Group’s office. The selected site spans approximately 3,800 square meters, originating from the combination of two separate plots. Our choice of this site derives in the historical significance of Myeongdong.

명동은 1800년대 전형적인 주택가에서 일제강점기를 겪고, 다방을 중심으로 한 문화예술의 중심지가 되었다가 6.25전쟁 이후 패션을 중심으로 한 문화를 이끌며 지금의 모습이 되었다. 이러한 명동의 역사 중에서도 과거에 다방을 중심으로 문화예술의 중심지였다는 점에 집중했다. 과거의 명동은 다양한 다방이 존재하며 젊은이들이 모이고 현대문학과 종합예술 같은 예술이 중심이 되는 곳이었다. 그러나 시간이 많이 지나며 지금의 명동은 쇼핑과 버스킹 공연 및 노점상과 같은 길거리 문화가 주를 이루고 있다.

In the 1800s, Myeongdong was a typical residential area. However, following the disruptive period of Japanese occupation, it underwent a transformation into a vibrant hub of culture and arts, particularly revolving around “Dabang” (Korean-style Cafés). Post the Korean War, it evolved into the bustling epicenter it is today, synonymous with fashion and modernity. Our focus delves into Myeongdong’s historical roots as a cultural nucleus centered around Dabangs. In the past, it served as a gathering place for young people, with a strong focus on modern literature and the arts. However, the Japanese occupation era left a scar on Myeongdong’s history, reshaping its cultural landscape into what it is today, dominated by shopping and street culture, including busking performances and street vendors.

이러한 명동의 문화들은 동쪽의 명동성당과 역사공원으로, 서쪽의 많은 길거리 노점상과 쇼핑거리로, 그리고 남쪽의 쇼핑거리 및 버스킹 공연으로 잘 드러나 있다. 우리는 명동의 특색이 상대적으로 드러나지 않는 북쪽의 대지를 선정하였다.

The culture of Myeongdong is richly portrayed by landmarks such as Myeongdong Cathedral and Historical Park in the east, the bustling array of street vendors and shopping streets in the west, and the lively atmosphere of shopping streets and busking performances in the south. Our chosen site lies in the northern part, where the true essence of Myeongdong remains relatively undiscovered.

명동의 대부분의 거리는 건물과 밀접해 있어 사람들을 받아주는 공개공지가 없는 상태이다. 그러나 해당 부지는 동서쪽으로 넓은 공개공지를 만들어 새로운 사람들이 유입되는, 또한 머무를 수 있는 장소가 되어줄 수 있으며, 대지의 동서쪽 길을 연결하여 기존의 명동길과 평행하는 새로운 명동의 거리를 담을 수 있다. 이 프로젝트를 통해 북쪽에서 유입되는 인구를 다시 남쪽으로 뿌려주는 문화적 허브의 역할을 수행할 수 있다.

Unlike many streets in Myeongdong, which are enclosed by buildings, this site possesses a unique potential for the creation of expansive public spaces to the east and west. These areas could be transformed into welcoming environments where the public can gather and linger. Additionally, by establishing a connection between the east and west streets of the site and introducing a new street parallel to the existing Myeongdong street, the project aims to serve as a cultural nucleus. This initiative not only fosters a sense of community within the site but also endeavors to draw the population from the north to the south, revitalizing Myeongdong’s cultural essence.

Concept

명동의 북쪽에 예술가들을 모아 그들에게 작업할 수 있는 환경과 공간을 제공하고, 공개공지와 연결된 길을 통해 모은 사람들을 예술가들과 교류하게 하여 명동 전역에 문화예술의 물결을 다시 일으키고자 한다.

Our plan involves gathering artists on the north side of Myeongdong. We’ll provide them with workspace and connect them with the public through open spaces and pathways. Our goal is to rekindle a wave of culture and art throughout Myeongdong.

Program

이런 문화예술의 물결을 일으키기 위한 메인 프로그램은 총 3가지가 있다.

첫 번째는 야외 버스킹 공연 무대로, 평소에는 공원처럼 사람들을 받아주고 휴식을 위한 기능을 하지만 공연이 진행될 때는 사람들을 활발하게 모으고, 실내로도 확장되어 그라운드레벨에서 문화예술이 시작되는 공간으로 역할을 한다.

두 번째는 전시 및 예술가 작업공간으로, 예술가들이 명동파랑에서 작업한 것들을 전시 할 수 있는 공간을 제공한다. 예술가들이 작업할 수 있는 공간을 제공하고 그 작업물을 전시할 수 있도록 한다. 때때로는 예술가의 작업공간이 전시공간이 될 수도 있으며 이는 사용자들이 예술가를 더욱 가까이서 마주하는 계기가 된다.

마지막으로 식당은 직접적인 소통이 이루어지는 곳이며, 식당 겸 공연장의 의미는 평소에는 식사용 테이블로 기능을 하던 거대한 테이블이 이벤트가 있는 날이면, 연설을 위한 단상이, 연주를 위한 무대가 되기도 한다. 이 곳은 예술가들끼리의 소통을 위한 곳이기도 하며, 예술가와 사용자들의 소통을 위한 곳이기도 하다.

To cultivate this cultural wave, we’ve implemented three key programs:

Firstly, the outdoor busking performance stage doubles as a welcoming park and a gathering space during performances. It extends to the ground floor of the building, serving as a hub for various cultural and artistic activities.

Secondly, the exhibition and artist workspace at “Myeongdong Parang” provides a platform for artists to showcase their work. This space fosters intimacy between artists and the public, where the artist’s workspace transforms into an exhibition area.

Lastly, the restaurant functions as a communication and performance hub. While primarily a dining area, the large table converts into a stage for speeches and events. It serves as a space for artists to interact with one another and engage with the audience effectively.
