이 프로젝트는 성균관대학교 캠퍼스와 외부 도시를 연결하는 게이트 공간을 재해석한다. 단순한 출입구로 기능하는 게이트가 아니라, 캠퍼스와 외부 사이의 레벨 차이를 활용하여 다양한 이동 경로와 공간을 형성하고, 사람들이 이동하며 머물고 풍경을 경험할 수 있는 캠퍼스와 도시 사이의 입체적인 연결 공간으로 작동하도록 의도하였다.
건물의 곡선 형태는 성균관대학교를 상징하는 은행잎의 형상에서 영감을 받아 형성되었다. 외부 레벨에서는 캠퍼스 내부를 바라볼 수 있는 광장과 테라스가 형성되고, 캠퍼스 레벨에서는 선큰 가든을 중심으로 스터디 공간과 전시 공간이 배치되어 하나의 연속된 공간 흐름을 만든다. 사람들은 대나무 숲 사이를 따라 이어지는 램프를 산책하거나 곡선형 계단을 따라 이동하며 공간을 경험할 수 있으며, 중앙에 위치한 솔리드하지만 열린 홀 공간을 통해서도 외부와 캠퍼스 사이를 오갈 수 있다. 이러한 다양한 이동 경로들이 캠퍼스와 도시를 자연스럽게 이어주는 연결고리가 된다.
건물의 상당 부분이 지하에 배치되어 있기 때문에 자연 채광은 중요한 설계 요소가 된다. 계단의 흐름에 맞추어 배치된 천창은 지하 공간 깊숙한 곳까지 빛을 끌어들이며, 동시에 공간을 따라 이어지는 이동의 리듬을 강조한다. 서로 다른 레벨에 머무르며 다양한 풍경을 바라볼 수 있고, 폴딩 도어를 통해 선큰 가든이 외부 전시 공간으로 확장되는 등 여러 방식의 공간 경험이 가능하도록 계획하였다.
This project reinterprets a campus gateway that connects Sungkyunkwan University with the surrounding city. Rather than functioning as a simple entrance, the design utilizes the level difference between the campus and the city to create multiple circulation paths and spatial layers, allowing people to move, pause, and experience the surrounding landscape as they transition between the two environments.
The curved form of the building is inspired by the shape of ginkgo leaves, a symbolic element of the university. At the outer level, a plaza and terrace overlook the campus, while at the campus level a sunken garden anchors spaces for study and exhibition, forming a continuous spatial sequence. Visitors can walk along ramps passing through a bamboo grove or move through curved stairways, while a central hall provides another passage connecting the city and the campus. These various circulation paths serve as a link that naturally connects the campus and the city.
As much of the building is located below ground level, natural light becomes a critical design element. Skylights aligned with the flow of the stairs bring daylight deep into the underground spaces while emphasizing the rhythm of movement through the building. Different levels provide varying views and places to stay, and the sunken garden can expand into an outdoor exhibition space through folding doors.
