“사람에게 가장 따뜻하게 느껴지는 것은 무엇일까?”
조명을 통해 공간의 분위기를 따뜻하게 만들고자 했고, ‘따뜻함’이라는 개념을 떠올렸을 때 가장 직관적으로 떠오른 대상인 모닥불을 컨셉으로 설정했다.
모닥불은 일정한 형체가 없다. 규칙적인 패턴 없이 끊임없이 변화하는 불꽃의 모습은 자연스럽고 유기적인 아름다움을 만든다. 이러한 특징을 표현하기 위해 종이를 구기고 접는 과정에서 생긴 다양한 선들을 추출하여 기본 형태를 만들고, 이를 재배치해 불꽃의 흐름을 닮은 평면 구조를 구성했다. 이후 이 평면을 기반으로 뿔대 형태의 조각들을 각각 다른 높이로 디자인하여, 중앙이 가장 높고 주변으로 갈수록 랜덤하게 변화하는 모닥불의 형상을 구현했다.
불은 주변을 밝히며 온도에 따라 서로 다른 색을 띠는 특징이 있다. 이를 표현하기 위해 반투명 아크릴을 사용해 아래쪽에서는 빛이 여러 방향으로 퍼져 주변을 밝히도록 했고, 위쪽은 불투명한 재료를 사용하되 상단을 열어 빛이 부분적으로 새어나오도록 설계했다. 또한 양면의 색이 노란색과 흰색으로 다른 하드보드지를 사용하여 앞뒤 면을 조절해 배치함으로써 각 조각이 서로 다른 색을 띠면서도 하나의 불꽃처럼 자연스럽게 어우러지도록 했다.
“What feels the warmest to people?”
When I first encountered the lighting design assignment, I wanted to create a lamp that could bring a warm mood to a space. The image that immediately came to mind as a symbol of warmth was a bonfire.
A bonfire does not have a fixed form. Its flames constantly change, appearing in irregular and random patterns, which creates a natural and organic beauty. To capture this quality, I crumpled and folded paper to generate various lines, then extracted and rearranged those lines to create a base form. Using this plane as a foundation, I designed cone-shaped pieces with varying heights, with the center being the tallest and the surrounding pieces changing randomly. This arrangement visually represents the dynamic form of a bonfire.
Bonfire also has the characteristic of illuminating its surroundings while displaying different colors depending on temperature. To express this, translucent acrylic was used so that light could spread in multiple directions from the lower part, softly lighting the surrounding area. The upper section was made with opaque material, leaving the top open so that light could partially escape. In addition, double-sided hardboard with yellow on one side and white on the other was used, allowing each piece to have slightly different colors depending on orientation, while still harmonizing as a single composition resembling a flame.
