Frank Lloyd Wright의 Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum에서 동선은 위에서 아래로 자연스럽게 하강하며, 그 궤적을 따라 빛이 사방으로 퍼져나간다. VORTEX OF LIGHT는 이렇듯 구겐하임 미술관이 지닌 동선과 빛의 유기적인 특징을 엮어 조형적 언어로 번역한 작업이다.
미술관의 건축적 동선은 하나로 규정된 듯 보이지만, 관람객 개개인의 보폭과 취향에 따라 실제 동선은 무수히 파편화된다. 이렇듯 단일한 흐름 속에서 파생되는 다채로운 개성들을 서로 다른 크기의 원형과 계단이라는 입체적 형태로 시각화했다.
빛은 동선을 감싸는 벽면을 따라 끊임없이 반사되며 전진한다. 하나의 선에서 출발한 한 줄기의 빛은 공간 전체로 반사되며 역동적인 흐름을 완성한다.
이러한 조형적 조화는 시점을 이동할 때마다 매번 새로운 미학적 경험과 개성으로 다가온다. 특히 위에서 아래로 빛을 내리쬘 때, 빛의 반사를 표현한 실과 그 아래로 겹겹이 펼쳐지는 그림자의 궤적은 공간 속에 보이지 않는 진짜 빛의 소용돌이, 즉 Vortex of Light를 극적으로 구현해 낸다.
In Frank Lloyd Wright’s Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, circulation naturally descends from the top to the bottom, while light spreads throughout the space along its path. VORTEX OF LIGHT is a sculptural interpretation that translates the museum’s organic relationship between circulation and light into a three-dimensional architectural language.
Although the museum’s circulation appears to follow a single predetermined route, each visitor’s actual journey becomes fragmented according to their own pace, interests, and way of experiencing the space. This diversity emerging from a unified flow is expressed through circular forms of varying sizes and three-dimensional stair elements, visualizing the individuality that branches from one continuous movement.
Light continuously advances as it reflects along the walls that embrace the circulation path. Originating from a single line, one beam of light repeatedly reflects throughout the space, generating a dynamic and immersive flow.
This sculptural harmony offers a new aesthetic experience from every viewpoint. In particular, when illuminated from above, the threads representing the reflection of light, together with the layered shadows cast beneath them, dramatically reveal the invisible vortex of light within the space—the very essence of Vortex of Light.

Guggenheim Museum은 중앙의 원형 보이드를 중심으로 나선형 램프가 이어지는 독창적인 공간 구조를 가진다. 관람자는 최상층에서 시작해 하나의 연속된 동선을 따라 자연스럽게 하강하며 전시를 경험하고, 이 과정에서 천창을 통해 유입된 자연광은 중앙 공간을 따라 아래로 확산된다. 빛은 나선형 동선과 함께 끊임없이 변화하는 공간감을 형성하며, 관람자의 이동에 따라 서로 다른 분위기를 만들어낸다. 이러한 동선과 빛의 유기적인 관계는 공간을 단순한 전시 장소가 아닌 하나의 경험으로 완성시키며, 건축 자체가 전시의 일부가 되도록 한다. 이러한 특징은 VORTEX OF LIGHT가 형태를 전개하는 핵심 모티브가 되었으며, 작품은 이를 추상적인 조형 언어로 재해석하였다.
Frank Lloyd Wright’s Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum features a distinctive spatial composition centered around a circular void with a continuous spiral ramp. Visitors begin their journey at the top level and gradually descend along a single uninterrupted circulation path, while natural light entering through the skylight spreads downward into the central atrium. As the spiral circulation unfolds, the light continuously transforms the spatial atmosphere, creating different visual experiences throughout the visitor’s movement. This organic relationship between circulation and light turns the museum into more than an exhibition space, making the architecture itself part of the exhibition experience. These spatial qualities became the primary inspiration for VORTEX OF LIGHT, which reinterprets them through an abstract sculptural language.
Concept
본 작품은 크게 두 가지 요소인 동선과 빛을 중심으로 원건물을 조형적으로 재해석하였다. 하나의 동선에서 파생되는 다양한 움직임을 서로 다른 크기의 원형 요소와 계단 형태로 표현하여 관람객마다 달라지는 경험과 개성을 시각화하였다. 또한 천창에서 시작된 빛이 공간을 따라 확산되고 반복적으로 반사되는 과정을 실과 그림자의 레이어로 구현하여, 보이지 않는 빛의 흐름을 입체적인 형태로 표현하였다. 이를 통해 동선과 빛이 하나의 유기적인 흐름으로 연결되는 VORTEX OF LIGHT를 구현하고자 하였다.
This project reinterprets the original building through two primary elements: circulation and light. The diverse movements generated from a single circulation path are expressed through circular elements of varying sizes and stair-like forms, visualizing the unique experience of each visitor. The diffusion and repeated reflection of light from the skylight are represented through layers of threads and shadows, transforming the invisible movement of light into a tangible spatial form. Through this reinterpretation, the project embodies VORTEX OF LIGHT, where circulation and light merge into a single organic flow.
