Agenda

Wetlands, a forgotten place, sat close to water, stood with humanity, and long held earth’s carbon. As cities expanded, wetlands became urban land. How can we return nature—now mere background—to place, and let architecture belong to nature, not the city?

Through reeds, we act as subjects of a cycle in the wetland, over time, as living things act, architecture mediates: incomplete, and in-process.

Concept

Timeline : Read

Reeds are both the central feature of the Suncheon Bay Reed Festival and a visual medium through which wetland migration caused by climate change can be observed. As an architectural material, reeds place architecture within their seasonal cycle, making it subject to the temporality of an annually regenerating plant rather than an autonomous presence imposed upon the land.

Meterial Life : Carbon Feedback Loop

Architecture begins with reed and black pine, natural materials rooted in the landscape of Suncheon Bay and the project site. Reeds form the architectural elements, while black pine becomes a frame for human activity; together, they participate in the land’s carbon cycle from the architecture’s emergence to its disappearance. Through maintaining and repairing these materials over time, humans become active participants in the ecological cycle.

Architectural Component : Read, Timber, and Others

Reeds become ceilings, roofs, and walls, creating varied spatial experiences within the wetland. In some places, they form the architecture itself; in others, they define and support the space.

Basic frame concept

Mud concrete lowers the pH to match the surrounding ecosystem, while shell lime uses local resources. Voids at the base allow water and organisms to pass through, promoting sedimentation and land formation. The architecture thus adapts to environmental change.

Master Plan

Master plan & Typical section

At the end of the boardwalk lies a broad clearing, beyond which a mountain trail continues. Beside it is an existing rest area.

With water nearby, mountains to the east, and tidal reed fields to the west, the proposal preserves the shelter’s character while offering layered experiences absent from the boardwalk. It is envisioned as a place to form memories of Suncheon Bay Wetland and to step forward again, crossing the sluice from the bird observatory to the workshop.

As architecture settles into Suncheon Bay and becomes a place experienced as shelter, bird observatory, and workshop, it begins to merge with the wetland. Spaces where people once played, rested, watched birds, and stood enclosed by reeds gradually become ground where other forms of life can take root.
