Agenda

The core of Louis Kahn’s original architectural style is to honestly reveal the intrinsic material properties of structure and materials, and to clearly separate spaces into “Served” spaces, where human activities take place, and “Servant” spaces, which support them. He primarily used heavy, monumental concrete and brick reminiscent of ancient ruins, imparting depth and a sense of sacredness to spaces through the dramatic contrast of light and shadow. Furthermore, by strictly dividing spatial hierarchies according to the functions of the building—utilizing servant spaces as the framework and protective shell for served spaces—he achieved overall order and harmony through structural systems and repeating grids.
Features

The original Yale University Art Gallery and Center for Architecture building designed by Louis Kahn is famous for clearly dividing space into “Served” spaces, which are primary areas for human activity like galleries, and “Servant” spaces, which are service zones that help these main spaces function, such as staircases. Usually, these servant spaces are hidden to liberate the served spaces from functional clutter. The key features of this original building include the hidden spiral stairwell inside, the “compression and expansion” spatial sequence appearing at the entrance, the depth of the cruciform concrete frame from the 4th-floor ceiling structure, the structural grid serving as the building’s core system, and the internal void spaces.
Design

However, this project focuses on reversing this traditional hierarchy between served and servant spaces through a 6-step design process based on these five key elements of the original building. In Step 1: Vertical Transition Space Formation, Kahn’s hidden spiral stairwell was extracted, split into a semicircle, and opened up to expose internal movement, placing it on the main facade so that the servant space becomes the main formal element. Furthermore, the entry sequence of “compression and expansion” from the original building was translated into a vertical transition space using varying gaps and thicknesses of the lower ring members. In Step 2: Insert cross-column structure, to maximize the sense of depth from the cruciform concrete frame of the original 4th-floor ceiling, it was scaled up into a heavy vertical column and inserted right into the semi-circular cylinder. In Step 3: Space connection via mass extension, the front mass was extended toward the rear to ensure it functions effectively as a transition space, creating a cohesive connection between the two masses.
In Step 4: Add grid structure, the structural grid—the core system of the original building—was placed into the central space, staggering the grids to maintain the overall rectangular volume while seamlessly linking the front and rear masses. In Step 5: Void Space Formation, an atrium void was carved out inside this symbolic grid mass, opening up the center to lighten the heavy presence of the cruciform column and balancing the overall model. Finally, in Step 6: Lower ring mass extension, the lower ring mass was extended to tie all elements together and achieve a unified sense of connection. As a result, by remodeling these five key elements—the open spiral stairwell, the compression and expansion sequence, cruciform columns, the structural grid, and the atrium void—this project successfully challenges and flips the traditional relationship between served and servant spaces.
