스포츠 클라이밍이 대중화된 지금, 자연 클라이밍은 종목의 근본이지만 사람들에게 낯설 뿐이다.
자연암벽은 인공벽과 달리 기상, 낙석, 루트 판단, 장비 상태, 파트너와의 호흡이 모두 등반의 조건이 된다.
그러나 이러한 조건들을 받아낼 물리적 거점이 없다. 이 프로젝트는 그 공백을 하나의 건축적 문턱으로 해석한다.
While sport climbing is mainstream, outdoor climbing remains its root, yet unfamiliar to many. Unlike artificial walls, outdoor climbing equires navigating weather, rockfalls, route reading, gear status, and partner communication. However, no physical base exists to handle these conditions. This project interprets that spatial void as an architectural threshold.
인수봉 자연암벽 앞 산중턱에 놓이는 세 개의 매스는 등산에서 등반으로, 관람에서 체험으로, 준비에서 출발로 이어지는 과정을 단계적으로 조직한다.
1번 매스는 등산객과 클라이머가 함께 머무는 공공 베이스로서 자연암벽을 이해하고 관찰하며 가볍게 체험하는 장소가 된다.
2번 매스는 기상, 낙석, 루트 상태를 읽고 위험을 조율하는 안전 운영 코어로 작동한다.
3번 매스는 암벽 바로 앞에서 몸과 장비, 파트너와 판단을 최종적으로 정렬하는 전이 장치가 된다.
Placed on the slope, three masses sequentially organize the transition from hiking to climbing, viewing to departure. Mass 1 serves as a public base to observe and experience climbing, Mass 2 acts as a safety control core, and Mass 3 aligns body, gear, and judgment right before the climb.
Design
핵심 과제는 자연 속에 건축을 어떻게 놓을 것인가에 있다.
3번 매스는 이 태도가 가장 명확하게 나타나는 장소로, 구조는 마이크로파일, 락 앵커, 인장 케이블, 철골 프레임으로 이루어지며, 지형에 최소한으로 접촉하면서 매달림과 확보, 하중의 감각을 건축적 구축 방식으로 번역한다.
자연암벽 앞에서 등반 전 마지막 준비와 판단을 수행하는 전이 장치다.
클라이머는 이곳에서 루트와 기상 상태를 읽고, 장비와 파트너를 점검한다.
동시에 등산객은 실제 등반 행위를 가까이에서 관찰하며 자연클라이밍의 장면을 경험한다.
The key challenge lies in placing architecture within nature. Mass 3 clearly demonstrates this attitude: its structure micropiles, rock anchors, tension cables, and steel frame minimizes terrain contact while architecturally translating senses of suspension, belaying, and load. Acting as a transitional device before the rock face, it lets climbers check routes, weather, gear, and partners before ascent, while hikers observe real climbing up close.

사이트는 인수봉이라는 목적지 자체보다, 그곳에 이르기 직전의 흐름에서 추출했다.
등산객의 백운대 루트와 클라이머의 인수봉 루트가 나뉘는 공통분기점과 암벽 사이구간을 사이트 후보지로 보고, 하나의 큰 시설을 삽입하기보다 루트의 성격과 행위의 밀도에 따라 매스를 분산배치한다.
1번 매스는 그중 가장 공공적인 층위로, 등산과 등반의 동선이 처음 겹치는 자리에서 인수봉을 향해 길게 걸쳐진다.
The site was extracted from the flow just before Insubong. Identifying the area between the Baegundae-Insubong junction and the rock face as the site, masses are distributed by route characteristics rather than inserting a single large facility.
평면은 진입과 안내, 암벽 정보와 교육, 장비 정리, 체험, 휴식과 전망이 순차적으로 이어지도록 구성된다.
이곳에서 등산객은 자연암벽을 바라보고 이해하며, 클라이머는 본격적인 등반 전 몸과 장비를 준비한다.
1번 매스는 산중턱의 지형을 지우지 않고 그 위에 얹히듯 놓이며, 자연암벽을 향한 출발을 하나의 공공적이고 완충적인 과정으로 전환한다.
Mass 1, the most public tier where hiking and climbing routes first overlap, stretches toward Insubong to sequentially handle orientation, rock info, gear prep, trial experience, and rest. Sitting atop the slope without erasing the terrain, Mass 1 turns the approach to the rock face into a public buffering process.
