경기 남부지역과 서울을 잇는 교통의 중심지인 사당역은 수도권에서 가장 붐비는 지역으로 알려져있다. 또한 다양한 음식점들과 회사가 모여있는 상업의 중심지이기도 하다. 그렇게 때문에 사당역을 단순히 유동인구가 많고 다양한 활동이 이루어지는 곳이라고 생각하기 쉽다. 하지만 실제로는 지리적인 이점을 제대로 활용하지 못해, 약 80%의 사람들이 사당역에 머무르지 않고 그냥 지나치는 환승지의 역할에 그치고 있다.

Sadang station is well known as one of the most crowded transportation hub in the metropolitan area, connecting Seoul and the southern Gyeonggi-do. It is also a center of commerce, filled with various restaurants and companies. Therefore, it seems that there are a lot of floating population and activities around Sadang station. In fact, despite its geographical advantage, Sadang station is not being used well, so that 80% of the people do not stay but just pass through this area to transfer.

이러한 현상의 가장 큰 이유 중 하나는 문화 산업의 결핍이라고 생각한다. 이를 해결하고자 교통과 상업의 중심지로서의 이점과 강남 – 명동 등 서울의 다른 상업의 중심지와 비교하여 상대적으로 낮은 임대료를 가진 지역의 특성을 고려해, 사회초년생을 위한 문화센터 및 창업지원센터를 구축하고자 했다.

One of the biggest reason of this phenomenon would be the lack of cultural industry. To solve this problem, I came up with a cultural center/foundation support center for the young, considering that the site is a transportation and commercial hub and has relatively low rent compared to Gangnam or Myeongdong.

디자인 컨셉은 사람들의 수평적인 동선을 수직적인 동선으로 유도하는 것이다. 사람들이 모이고 흩어지는 사당역의 공간적 특징을 형상화하여 건물 중간층에는 사람들이 상호작용하며 각자의 의견을 수많은 사람들 앞에서 표출할 수 있는 공간을 만들어주었다.

The design concept was to lead people form the horizontal circulation on the site to the vertical circulation in the building. Visibilizing the characteristic of Sadang station, a gathering and scattering of people, there is a space in the middle of the mass, where people communicate and express their opinions in front of a lot of people.

Design Process

Site Configuration
Make a building and a garden get equal sunlight, creating the building in the east and the garden in the west.

Dividing with Program
Divide the mass by programs regarding to the sunlight. The northern mass is an office and the southern mass is a residence tower.

Meet – Met -Met
Tilt the mass and connect each other to make an open space and protect a privacy of the upper mass

Podium for Public
Make a podium to attract people. Contrast to the main mass with vertical flow, the podium has a horizontal circulation.

Differentiation of Podium
Move the podium mass back and forth according to the programs, such as a job booth, meeting rooms and staff facilities.
