‘뉴트로’는 NEW와 RETRO의 합성어로, 겪어보지 못한 과거의 새로운 해석으로 옛 것에 대한 신선함을 일으키는 것을 일컫는다. 유행은 돌고 돈다는 말처럼 우리는 익숙함과 새로움이 과거와 현재로 끊임없이 대체되는 상황을 반복한다. 그렇다면 뉴트로는 건축에서 또한 과거의 현재를 새롭게 바라볼 수 있는 개념이 될 수 있다. 뉴트로가 건축에도 적용된다면 어떠한 것을 새롭게 해석해야할까? 또, 어떤 신선함을 줄 수 있을까?
뉴트로는 옛 것에서 시작하는만큼 그 대상 선정이 중요하다. 누군가에겐 추억이 되지만, 누군가에겐 처음으로 다가올 대상지를 찾고자 하였다. 사람은 죽어서 이름을 남기듯이, 우리 도시 안에도 이름만 남아 기억으로 유지되고 있는 곳이 있다. 바로 서울 종로구의 피맛골이다. 분명 ‘피맛골’이라는 지명은 남아있지만 그 지명을 통해 공유되던 기억의 소산들은 사라졌다. 피맛골이 왜 피맛골이며 그곳에서 어떤 사람들과 이야기가 있었는지 요즘 사람들은 알지 못하고, 단지 그것을 기억하고 있는 사람들의 추억 속에 남아있을 뿐이다. 본 프로젝트는 서울 종로구에 대상지를 선정하여, 피맛골의 장소성과 물리적 요소를 새롭게 해석하여 뉴트로 건축을 이루고자 한다.
‘NEWTRO’ is a portmanteau of ‘new’ and ‘retro’, referring to a reinterpretation of the past with a fresh perspective, creating novelty in things that are old and familiar. Trends, as the saying goes, come and go, and we are in a constant cycle of replacing familiarity and newness between the past and the present. In this context, ‘NEWTRO’ could also become a concept in architecture, allowing us to view the past from a new perspective. If applied to architecture, what should be reinterpreted in a new way? And what freshness can be brought about?
As ‘NEWTRO’ originates from the past, the selection of the subject is crucial. While it might be a memory for some, it could be a destination yet to be discovered by others. Just as people leave their names after they pass away, within our cities, there are places that survive through their names, maintained by memories. One such place is ‘Pimatgol’ in Jongno-gu, Seoul. Certainly, the name ‘Pimatgol’ remains, but the shared memories it represented have vanished. People today might not know why it’s called ‘Pimatgol’ or what stories and people were associated with it. It remains only in the memories of those who remember. This project aims to select a location within Seoul’s Jongno-gu, and by reinterpreting the spatial and physical elements of Pimatgol, aims to achieve a ‘NEWTRO’ architecture.

Site
사이트는 인근에 인사동, 익선동 등 젊은 사람들이 꾸준히 유입되는 핫플레이스가 있고, 종묘, 경복궁 등 관광지와도 가깝게 자리한다. 이에 반해 사이트 주변인 탑골공원 일대는 노인들만 가는 공원이라 인식되고, 종각역-종로3가역 대로변은 높은 공실률에 허덕이고 있다. 프로젝트를 통해 대상지는 끊긴 피맛골을 이어주는 길이자 주변에서 사람이 유입되고 또 유입시키는 장소로서 기능할 것이다.
The site is situated near popular hotspots like Insa-dong and Ikseon-dong, which consistently attract young people. It’s also conveniently close to tourist destinations such as Jongmyo Shrine and Gyeongbokgung Palace. In contrast, the area around Tapgol Park has been perceived mainly as a park for the elderly, and the main road between Jonggak Station and Jongno 3-ga Station is struggling with high vacancy rates. Through this project, the target location, which connects the disconnected Pimatgol, will serve as a pathway and a hub for attracting and welcoming people in the vicinity.
